Backlinks are valuable for SEO because they represent a "vote of confidence" from one site to another.
Search engines send out robots once per week that crawl and index the entire web. The robots read your content looking for keywords; they also gather data about the amount and quality of backlinks to pages on your website.
Backlinks are a signal to search engines that other sites deem your content valuable enough to send their visitors to it. If many sites link to a page on your website, search engines infer that your content is interesting and therefore also worth ranking highly on a SERP (search engine results page).
